Notes
- The Tulip Tree is one of the largest native trees in North America. It is a member of the magnolia family and has distinct tulip shaped flowers. The showy, goblet shaped, orange-yellow-green flowers appear in late spring after the leaves form. The cone-like seed clusters sit upright on the branches. The golden-yellow fall color of the Tulip Tree makes this an excellent choice for large landscapes.
- This tree is an absolute favorite among bees and is known as a “honey tree” among apiasts thanks to its prodigious nectar and pollen production. The flowers produce such a heavy yield of nectar that they can pool at the base of the cup-shaped flowers and even seep between the upturned petals. A mature tuliptree can produce up to 9 pounds of nectar which honeybees can convert into over a pound of honey.
