Common witch-hazel is a large shrub with a picturesque irregular branching habit that naturally grows along woodland edges. The large, rounded, dark green leaves often hang onto the winter branches. The yellow strap-like flowers of this native shrub are among the last blooms to appear in fall, but are often hidden by the leaves. The fruit capsules mature a year after flowering, splitting open to expel seeds that are attractive to birds. Tolerant of road salt and clay soil. This is a great specimen plant or in a naturalized landscape.

Notes
- Pruning should only be used when necessary to maintain shape, which may be performed once annually or less in early spring
- Should be planted 8-10' apart for a screen.
- Its fragrant, yellow flowers with strap-like, crumpled petals appear in the fall, persisting for some time after leaf drop.
- Flowering starts when the plant is about six years old.
- Once pollinated the flowers go dormant for the winter, and mature the following year, taking a full season for the seed to reach maturity.
- The mature seeds open suddenly, with a popping sound, and are jetted to a distance of up to 30 feet from the mother tree.
