Vernal witch-hazel has yellow and orange-red flowers with a spicy fragrance that appear in late winter or very early spring, before the leaves unfurl, lasting three to four weeks. The new foliage is an attractive bronze-red color that matures to dark green. It turns a rich buttery yellow to golden yellow in fall. The dried leaves often persist into winter. The fruit capsules mature in September or October, then split open to expel black seeds that are attractive to birds. The plants can sucker to form colonies. This is a great specimen plant for a naturalized landscape.

Notes
- No regular pruning necessary, simply remove dead, damaged, or weak shoots. Prune in Spring after flowering if you need to control the size and shape.
- Should be planted 4-5' apart for a screen.
- Witch hazels are quite effective as backdrops, hedges, and screens or as specimen plants in more open areas.
- Watch for shooting seeds! During desiccation and as the seeds ripen within, the middle portion of the capsule becomes constricted, as if fingers were squeezing it. Eventually, the pressure becomes so great that the seeds are ejected from the pod.
