Introduced in 1922 by Princeton Nurseries of New Jersey, it has proven for more than a century to be tolerant of Dutch elm disease. Dark green foliage and upright, symmetrical form recommend it for street tree plantings.

Notes
- Elms are best pruned in late winter once the threat of extreme cold has passed.
- They make good street trees because they tolerate urban conditions, but keep in mind that planting an elm tree near sidewalks can lead to cracks and raised areas.
- The wood of American Elm and its cultivars has interlocking grains making it tolerant of flexing and bending while retaining strength, but also makes splitting firewood from American Elm either horrendously difficult or a great workout- depending on your perspective.
