Native to wetlands of the South, bald cypress is also surprisingly tolerant of dry soils and is hardy enough to survive in parts of southern Canada. A deciduous conifer, it has done well in urban street plantings.

Notes

• Unlike most cone-bearing trees, bald-cypress loses its needles each winter and grows a new set in spring. The russet-red fall color of its lacy needles is one of its outstanding characteristics.
• Hardy and tough, this tree will adapt to a wide range of soil types, whether wet, dry, or swampy.
• Exfoliating reddish-brown long narrow strips of bark are noted on younger trees, but older trees tend to peel much less.
• Woody knees, or above ground roots (up to 6 ft.), that grow around the perimeter of the tree. Provides stability in flooded soils.
